2011-12 GUFS PARP: Reading is Magical!: Middle School Poetry Slam!

Reading takes you to magical places in magical ways. We invite you on a multimedia journey through the world of modern reading. We’ll learn how stories can take our imagination to new places through words, pictures and technology...Plans for this year's Parents As Reading Partners (P.A.R.P.) Week, Nov. 14-18, include field trips to the Desmond-Fish Library, Pajama Storytime, Middle School Poetry Slam, workshops with "A to Z Mysteries" author Ron Roy & young adult novelist Todd Strasser, a virtual assembly with 12-year-old author-activist Olivia Bouler, and an eBooks Day. Middle School Poetry Slam!

The front half of the Garrison School gym was transformed into a coffeehouse for Tuesday night's Middle School Poetry Slam. Bistro tables lent by Cold Spring's Foundry Cafe created an authentic setting for students to share their favorite poems, while musical interludes featuring Stacy and Art Labriola and students created the right vibe. Middle School Language Arts teacher Ian Berger directed the readings and school Guidance Counselor Mike Williams emceed the event. Thanks to all for adding to the creative atmosphere!

Reading Is Magical...Because It's Fun At Any Age!

Reading Receptions
All students are invited to dress up like a favorite literary character. Older students will visit younger grades to read and share favorite books & enjoy a snack together.

About PARP

Learning to read is the single most important activity in a child’s education. Studies show that children who read at home are better prepared to succeed in formal education. PARP is a program that asks parents to read with their children for at least fifteen minutes daily, stressing the fact that reading can be fun as well as informative. The choice of reading materials can vary from books to anything with printed words. The daily activity of reading together strengthens reading and communication skills and the caregiver/child relationship. PARP is a program that cements the necessary bond between the home and the school to encourage love of reading in our children. It was developed in 1978 by the late New York State Senator James Donovan, Chairman of the State Senate Education Committee; in 1987 the New York State PTA was asked to assume the program and has administered it since then.
