Our visiting authors had all the students brainstorming original poetry and fiction throughout the school day on Wednesday. "That Poetry Guy" Ted Scheu kicked off the morning with a special K-5 assembly where he got the kids thinking about how poetry can be both "hot" and "cool." He then took his engaging, upbeat show on the road, leading multiple classrooms in hands-on poetry workshops. He'll be back Thursday to spread his knack for--and love of--verse to more elementary students, ending with a special K-5 Poetry Reading Assembly. Meanwhile, in the Middle School wing, Elizabeth Cody Kimmel led the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders in what language arts teacher Ian Berger described as "real nuts-and-bolts writing workshops." Mrs. Kimmel drew on her own wide range of work, which spans children's books, young adult novels, and historical fiction. She kept a dialogue going with students as they developed working outlines for their own works of fiction and discussed the writing and publishing process in depth. She also made a special stop by Mrs. Dodge's second-grade class where her youngest fans could ask all their questions about her popular characters Osbert and Balto. The Garrison School thanks these talented professionals for sharing their gifts and inspiring our students!
