2011 Authors' Day: From Prose to Poetry

The Garrison School is pleased to welcome two accomplished authors to lead creative writing workshops on Wednesday, February 16, as part of the 2011 GUFS PARP weeklong celebration of reading.

Cold Spring's own Elizabeth Cody Kimmel will lead Middle School students in writing workshops aimed at creating a framework for original children's books. An author of more than 30 books for children and young adults, Ms. Kimmel was a zealous reader, buyer, and admirer of books from a very early age. Her books have been widely celebrated, including her popular "Suddenly Supernatural" series and her recent "The Reinvention of Moxie Roosevelt," a witty first-person narrative of a 13-year-old's quest for identity at boarding school. Boys have particularly enjoyed her books based on real-life events, including "Balto and the Great Race" about sled dogs heroically transporting medicine to sick children in Alaska and "Ice Story: Shackleton's Lost Expedition" about the explorer's ill-fated Endurance voyage of 1914.

We are also excited to welcome children's poet Ted Scheu back down from Middlebury, Vermont, for his third visit to the Garrison School. He'll be leading our elementary students through a two-day series of poetry-writing workshops. Known affectionately as "That Poetry Guy," Mr. Scheu considers himself to be a really big kid with gray hair, say 8 or 9 years old max. As a result, he captures kids' voices in verse better than just about any other poet for kids on the planet! Ted is also a teacher who visits more than 50 schools around the world each year helping kids find their poetic voices. His own collections, written in a hilarious, honest voice, include a book of family poems called "I Froze My Mother," another of school verse called "I Tickled My Teachers," and a new book of sports poems called "I Threw My Brother Out."

Students may pre-order books by our visiting authors and have their copies signed in person on Authors' Day. Students may also order books throughout PARP week. 20 % of all sales will go to the GUFS PTA! Click below for order forms.
